Perfect art lesson to practise precision, follow directions, and to improve fine motor skills for Primary School.
I usually have the video already playing when my class comes in so they have something to watch while settling down.
Introduce the lesson by saying: today we will practise how to follow a step by step instruction by making and origami angel. (I usually also explain that origami is a Japanese world, ORI means folding and KAMI means paper. It's a Japanese paper folding art.)
Make one angel beforehand to show the class.
Depending on my class' attention spam I usually have all the materials on their tables. (Unless they just can't help themselves and touch everything while I'm trying to talk to them...)
MATERLIAS:
scissors
glue sticks
origami paper (coloured paper, or even simple white A4 would do. Then they can draw on it and decorate it once finished)
compass (or any big+small circular object that they can draw around to make the circles)
Explain that you will be doing every step TOGETHER. Some of them will need help with some folds and that is OK. We all need to be patient with each other and wait. Tell your students that first you will watch each fold on the video. Then, you will show them the fold again. And then, they can fold their own. After each fold, I ask my minions to show me where they are. (This way no one is left behind).
Golden Rule: first ask help on your table. If no one can help you, then I will be coming over and help ONLY IF you sit quietly with your hand up.
This saves me a lot of time, but there will be definitely downtime when I have to help and the more able ones have to wait...
(I always watch the video in steps and pausing it after each fold. Then I make the same fold on my own piece showing them again how to do it. And THEN they can fold their own. This order is very important for me. I'm always making sure they do it this way from the beginning. If they do each step only when they saw it being done twice, it is less likely that they mess it up. :) Also, they learn patience, paying attention, and following directions at the same time.)
Tips:
Those who finish early can make a second angel on their own.
If they want, they can glue their angel on an A5 cardboard and make it into a Christmas card
